About 25,000 rally in Madrid in support of Spain’s state pension scheme

MADRID — An estimated 25,000 demonstrators took to the streets of Madrid on Saturday to demand the protection and strengthening of Spain’s public pension system. Pensioners, trade union members, and supporters gathered in the capital to call for guaranteed increases tied to the inflation rate and long-term financial sustainability for future generations.
Chanting slogans and waving banners, the crowd marched toward the central Puerta del Sol plaza, emphasizing that pensions are a fundamental right rather than a bargaining chip for politicians. The protest was organized by various retirement associations and labor unions who have grown increasingly vocal about preserving the welfare state.
Speakers at the rally highlighted the rising cost of living and argued that current pension adjustments are insufficient to cover basic expenses for elderly citizens. They urged the government to implement structural reforms that secure adequate funding for the system without compromising the purchasing power of retirees.
The demonstration remained peaceful throughout the day, with heavy police presence managing traffic along the main thoroughfares. Government officials have acknowledged the demonstrators’ concerns, noting that ongoing dialogue remains open regarding fiscal measures to ensure the stability of Spain’s social security framework.
